Description
This auction is for near perfect condition book titled: "Chicago Golf Club 1892 - 1992". It is extremely hard to find a copy of this book, let alone a new one! The book was copyrighted to the Chicago Golf Club in 1991 and was produced in a limited edition. I had a conversation with a member once and he believed there were only 1,500 copies produced. I can't guarantee that, but that was the information relayed to me. If that's the case, this book is quite scarce and the chances of seeing another one up for sale are very remote. Book was published in 1992, is 153 pages long, and was made available only to the members of the Chicago Golf Club. The book was not made available to the public, so with the limited edition it is quite rare! Of all the club histories, this is simply one of the most important, since Chicago Golf Club was one of the founding members of the U.S.G.A. I did see one other copy of this book that was used, sell a few years ago for over $600. I think I set a very fair price for such a scarce book, so here's your chance to grab this one if you collect extremely rare golf books. Book itself is in fantastic shape and has no flaws. There is a dust jacket that comes with the book that is in very good condition. Couple of very small blemishes, but nothing noticeable. When I was taking photographs of the book, the dust jacket has somewhat of a glossy finish and it kept giving off too much glare, so I took it off for display purposes only. The book will be shipped with the dust jacket. Chicago Golf Club is the oldest 18 hole golf club in the country. There is a rich history at this fine club and the book details everything. The text is wonderful and discusses in detail C.B. Macdonald's plan of building the best championship course of its time. Wonderful photographs of the painting of C.B. Macdonald that hangs in the clubhouse, a great photo of papers drawn up forming the U.S.G.A. that is signed by all five founding clubs (St. Andrews in New York, Shinnecock Hills, The Country Club, Newport Golf Club and The Chicago Golf Club - signed by C.B. Macdonald). I love the old photographs of the participants (Willie Anderson, Joe Lloyd, James Foulis, Chandler Egan, and may others) in the U.S. Open Championships played at Chicago Golf Club in the late 1800's and early 1900's. There is also a great chapter discussing the fire that took place at Chicago Golf which destroyed the beautiful clubhouse in 1912. Seth Raynor is also discussed on several pages in the next chapter as he is the one credited with the current design of the Chicago Golf Club after collaborating with C.B. Macdonald for so many years. Another great section details the playing of the 1928 Walker Cup at Chicago Golf Club. There's a wonderful black and white photo of the U.S. team comprised of Chick Evans, Bobby Jones, Francis Ouimet, and other greats. It doesn't get any better than that. My favorite part of the book is the 46 page section devoted to nothing but the incredible golf course at the Chicago Golf Club. There is a wonderful comparison of the map of the course when it was first laid out by Macdonald and an aerial photograph showing how the holes are laid out in current times. Some have changed and others are exactly the same. See the photograph below. Every golf hole is broken down and has a minimum of two pages. There are color photographs of each hole along with an architectural drawing of the hole. Ben Crenshaw (an honorary member of the club) gives a description of each golf hole and how it should be played. Without a doubt some of the best photography of a golf course I've ever seen put into a club history book. Take a look at the photos below and you'll see what I mean. The last part of the book discusses the club today. There are several color photographs of the beautiful clubhouse and many inside shots. There's a great photo of the statue of C.B.Macdonald in the garden at the club. One of the special things about the book is the chapter dedicated to all the Records for tournaments played at the Chicago Golf Club. There is a complete breakdown of all the major championships played at Chicago Golf Club, the year played, and all the participants along with their score totals. For example, in the 1897, the winner of the National Open for that year was Joe Lloyd who played out of Essex. The runner up was Willie Anderson who played out of Watch Hills. All 35 participants are listed with their club affiliation and their final score total. C.B. Macdonald tied for 11th that year. Same goes for the 1900 U.S. Open Golf Championship, which was won by Harry Vardon from England. The U.S. Amateur Championships are also listed (1897, 1905, 1909 and 1912) and once again it breaks everything down for each round (scores included) and who eventually won the final match. For example, the 1905 U.S. Amateur was won by Chandler Egan who defeated D.E. Sawyer, 6 & 5. At the end is a list of all the club champions starting in 1934. That is followed by a complete list of all the club presidents, starting with C.B. Macdonald in 1895. He was actually given the title of "Captain" instead of president back then. The last part of this section gives a complete list of all the members of the Chicago Golf Club as of 1991. This book was published for the members of the Chicago Golf Club and was never made available to the public, making it extremely rare. If you are a collector of hard to find golf books, don't miss the opportunity to add this rare one to your collection. Buyer to pay $8.00 for shipping. Paypal is an option for payment, but I would prefer check or money order. Please see my other auctions of golf items from exclusive golf clubs around the country.
