Description
Current Lot Important rigmate pair of mergansers, Thomas Gelston, Quogue, Long Island, New York, last quarter 19th century. The wooden keels are branded "THG" for Thomas H. Gelston. The only other pair known are in a Long Island museum. Hen is in unusual alert head position. Strong original paint with a nice mellow surface; there may be some very old over paint to the white areas of the drake; hen has a reglued crack in the bill with a tiny amount of filler added to the very end of the crack. Formerly in the collection of William D. Cox. "Gunners Paradise, Wildfowling and Decoys on Long Island", Townsend, p. 89.
