Description
Current Lot Rare and exceptional blackduck with balsa body in a sleeping pose, Charles E. "Shang" Wheeler, Stratford, Connecticut, circa 1940. Shang presented this fine decoy to the consignor's father, Mr. George F.B. Johnson of Buffalo, New York as a token of his appreciation after a hunting trip to Mr. Johnson's hunting club, the Mid-March Gunning Club at Turkey Point, Ontario, Canada. Turkey Superb orignla paint with a fine patinated surface; bold feathering and painted specula still intact; a few dents on the body, one at the top of the head, and around the edges of the tail; some flaking to the paint on the top of the head; overall excellen "Shang", Dixon Merkt, p. 71, decoy with very similar conformation pictured in color plate.
